When I am hosting and realize I need one more thing on the snack table, this holiday popcorn is the first place I go. It comes together in just a few minutes, looks genuinely festive with all that colorful contrast in the bowl, and holds its own next to anything else I have set out. No one ever guesses it took almost no effort, and that is exactly the kind of recipe I want in my back pocket during the busy holiday season.

A bowl of popcorn mixed with red and green candies, mini pretzels, and red and green sprinkles, drizzled with white chocolate.

It also travels better than almost any other party snack I make. I pack it into a container, toss it in the car, and it arrives looking just as good as it did on my counter. That makes it my go-to for potlucks, neighbor drop-offs, teacher gifts, and any gathering where I need to bring something without stressing about it surviving the ride over.

My kids are big popcorn fans year-round, and they already love popcorn balls and Halloween popcorn balls every spooky season, so a Christmas version was a natural next step. One of my favorite things about this recipe is how easy it is to scale up when the guest list grows. Double it, triple it, it comes together just as quickly and looks just as pretty every single time.

How to Make Holiday Popcorn

I’ll share an overview here. Scroll to the bottom of this post for a printable recipe card with a full list of ingredients, measurements, and step-by-step instructions.

A bowl of popcorn surrounded by smaller bowls containing M&Ms, pretzels, white candy wafers, red sprinkles, and green sprinkles.

Ingredient Notes

  • Popcorn: Use plain popped popcorn from the stovetop, an electric popper, or the microwave. Skip buttered microwave popcorn since it can interfere with the candy coating.
  • White candy wafers: Candy melts help hold all the mix-ins together.
  • M&Ms: Add color plus a bit of chocolate. Red and green work nicely for the holidays, but any flavor or seasonal mix is fine.
  • Pretzels: Give the mix a light, salty crunch that balances the sweetness.

Step-By-Step Instructions

This colorful holiday treat comes together with a little melting and mixing. In just a few simple steps, you’ll have a festive snack ready to serve or pack into gift bags.

    1. Spread out the popcorn mix.
    2. Drizzle with melted chocolate.
    3. Add sprinkles, toss, and let it set.

    Substitutions

    • Popcorn: Lightly salted or kettle corn works if you want a bit more sweetness.
    • White candy wafers: Use white chocolate chips with a little bit of coconut oil to get a drizzly texture.
    • Pretzels: Bring in salted peanuts, or crunchy cereal such as Chex or Cheerios.
    • Red and green sprinkles: Use nonpareils or crushed candy canes for a fun twist.

    Expert Tips

    • Line your baking sheet with parchment or wax paper. It prevents sticking and makes cleanup simple.
    • Freshly popped popcorn gives the best texture. If you’re using store-bought, stick with an unseasoned option so the coating doesn’t clash with added flavors.
    • Work quickly once the candy is melted and toss the popcorn with mix-ins right away so everything sticks before it sets.

    How to Store This Recipe

Let the coated popcorn cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Choose a cool, dry spot so the coating doesn’t soften and the popcorn stays crisp. It’s best not to refrigerate or freeze it, since the added moisture can change the texture.

    How to Serve Holiday Popcorn

Christmas popcorn pairs nicely with your favorite seasonal sips. We love it with peppermint mocha and other holiday coffees. You can set out a big bowl for movie night, add it to a holiday charcuterie board with fruit or cheese, or serve it alongside other sweet treats. It also works well in small cups or bags if you’re hosting and want a grab-and-go option for guests.

      • ½ tsp red sprinkles

      Notes

Freshly popped popcorn gives the best texture. If using store-bought, choose an unseasoned option so the coating doesn’t compete with added flavors.
Try more mix-ins like crushed candy canes, mini marshmallows, nuts, or dried cranberries.
Serve: Pair with festive drinks or a holiday snack board with fruit or cheese.
      Store: Let the coated popcorn cool and harden completely before transferring it to an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Keep it in a cool, dry spot;
avoid refrigerating or freezing it since moisture can soften the texture.
